CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Daisuke Niwa
AGE: 14
CANON: DNAngel

CANON HISTORY: wiki, canon wiki
CANON PERSONALITY:
If anything, Daisuke is a pretty average, nice kid. If there was anything an acquaintance would say about him, it's that he's a good kid who tries his best, with mixed results. He's the kind of person who does everything he can to help his friends without regards for his own safety--a typical selfless protagonist.

It's easy for Daisuke to become friends with anybody. Throughout DNAngel, it's been made well known that there is a feud between two families: the Niwas and the Hikaris. The feud is made clear that the two families have a general disdain for each other. However, with Daisuke thrown into the mix, he doesn't think Satoshi, his counterpart from the other family, is someone to be hated. To Daisuke, Satoshi is a treasured friend, despite the objections of his mother and grandfather and he continues to treat Satoshi the same as ever. Even though they're supposed to be enemies, Daisuke sticks to being friends with him, which then enabled Satoshi with the power of friendship to not entirely hate all of the Niwas either. Daisuke even has the audacity to invite him into his house when Satoshi was sick with the family still there. Amazing. Such stubbornness. This shows how much he values friendships and adheres to them--even to the point that he befriends his family's archnemesis.

Daisuke has a habit of doing unwarranted good deeds. Even in his youth, he managed to retrieve a stuffed animal from the other side of a very high fence when he saw that a little girl had lost it. He can't normally use his skills out in the open, so doing good things with them make him feel a little better. This mindset of helping people carried on to the present day.

Despite his good nature, there are times when Daisuke is exploited and he is aware of it, but he doesn't feel like there is much he can do to stop it from happening. Some examples of this are when he's roped into cleaning duty in school when it's not his turn, or being cast as a girl in a school play because everyone in the class voted for him. Another example is when he was being given the job as a thief, even though Daisuke was very much against stealing. Despite his objections, his mother made it hard to refuse, leaving him no choice but to give in. He has the ability to steal, but he does not make use of it except when it comes to his weekly heists at the museum. Daisuke is pretty honest and is usually free of crime otherwise, so he would rarely use his skills for personal gain. For example, if his friend is locked out of their house, he may pick the lock in order for his friend to get in. But he wouldn't rob anything from a bank or a jewelry store for personal needs.

Daisuke is very sincere and as mentioned earlier, honest, which is why it's hard for him to lie. He can try to lie, but he loses his composure quickly, making it easy to see through his lies since he wears his heart on his sleeve. Despite being so obvious, people in the series usually look over his bad lies, even though they all have their suspicions anyway. This oversight is good for him when he's trying to hide his identity as the Phantom Thief Dark and his exploits, so it all somehow works out. Thanks, convenient plot device.

Speaking of the Phantom Thief Dark, the series has him as a separate entity within Daisuke. Because of this, Dark has always been with Daisuke (several forced plot separations notwithstanding). Daisuke sometimes finds this a hassle, but as the series continues, living with Dark helps Daisuke grow as a person. Daisuke finds Dark's presence encouraging and has felt that he could do more with him around. He gradually becomes used to him, and he wants to one day do things without Dark's help. He wants to show that he doesn't always have to rely on Dark for his actions. His pride of wanting to be independent slowly forms over time. This is similar to siblings bonding where one looks up to the other, yet they share friendly banter at the same time.

However, the one thing that sets them apart is their desire for fame. The reason why people don't suspect Daisuke as the phantom thief is because he's a clumsy guy who doesn't want to stand out at all. He openly states his disdain to being famous. With this in mind, he always tries his best to not stick out like a sore thumb, such as controlling his physical abilities in P.E. to never look like he's the best at anything. On that point, despite how he can jump from third-story windows and perform other extremely difficult physical feats, he still manages to trip over his own feet. This is due to daydreaming and not paying attention, which he often does.

So there you have it, Daisuke is a pretty normal kid.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Daisuke has done a whole lot of training in his life. It's too much to list in a single bullet category, so I will list them all here.

Extreme parkour(?): He's been shown to jump over high fences since he was a tiny kid and leaping over giant pitfalls. He can also lift himself up from ledges very easily.
Fast reflexes: Apparently he gets dressed in a second the moment he falls through his bed. He also avoids stuff falling on him the moment his alarm rings in the morning to wake him up.
Sleight of hand: His other hobby is doing magic tricks and he's pretty good. It's a mundane thing to do on the side with his skills, but it's fine, so why not.
Lockpicking: Pretty standard for a thief to know, but apparently he can also hack into those electronic locks and get through ones that need iris scans...? wtf that's op
Disguises: He sometimes dresses up as a police officer (after taking their clothes) pretty quickly, making it easier to infiltrate art museums when it's surrounded by people. This isn't something he's best at, but he's not so shabby at it either.
Machinery knowledge(?): Apparently he can fix equipment too, shown when he was fixing the sound system and flickering lights while being on the play at the same time. He also knows how to disable security cameras and know how to get through security lasers.
Magical art: Sometimes, his paintings have some magical power like triggering other magical paintings or even a possibility to extend an artform's "life". It's been shown that the artworks that he creates have some magic in them.
Transformation: Feelings of love force his body to take on Dark's appearance (and sometimes his mind with it too). But since Dark is a playable character, I'll just have him only regain his appearance instead of Dark's personality along with it. He changes back with feelings of love (again).

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Daisuke Niwa
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: He stands at 5' 5", has black hair, black eyes. Everything else is the same except the usual physical differences of turning 17 from 14.

AU HISTORY:

• Daisuke was born in America to a relatively normal Japanese household as the only child. His parents are a bit eccentric though, with his dad being slightly more normal. While they were supportive of Daisuke’s decision to pursue art, they wanted to toughen him up a bit, so the mom suggests that he go live away from family to build upon his independence.
• Turns out that his parents and Naegi’s set this up because they had common goals and they were friends, so why not let their two kids live in an apartment by themselves, right?? They probably trusted their kids not to do anything outrageously stupid because that’s how… average they are… good job on raising your kids, guys.
• So Daisuke started living in Recolle starting from 14, when he was just starting high school. New school, new environment--he barely knew everyone so it was stressing for this tiny teenager, so he started taking up some temporary part-time jobs here and there to gather money, even if he was still receiving some money from his parents. It’s not enough!! And he really did want to build that independence gradually, so here he is, doing it.
• He didn’t live alone though. He lived with Makoto Naegi, who’s about 3 years older than him. He’s kinda like this surrogate older brother and they try to take care of each other the best they can because they both have horrible luck… they bond over their bad luck, art progression (putting art on fridge door for self. esteem!!), and just being housemates in general. They do dumb stuff together…
• He takes small sketch commissions online after he saved enough for a drawing tablet to earn more pocket change. He also buys groceries with Naegi or by himself so that their fridge isn’t perpetually vacant.
• He has art club after school. Sometimes he takes detours after school if he has spare time to do so.
• He’s just a normal high school student...

★ Makoto Naegi ([personal profile] optimistical): Forever housemate, someone that feels like a surrogate older brother, we ride together we die together kind of friend. They've done all sorts of weird things when their bad luck has forced their hand. Don't make me list them all... please...
★ Kyouko Kirigiri ([personal profile] evidentiary): Next door neighbor! Met her through Makoto and she has been nothing but helpful to him. He wants to pay her back, so he does... by giving her presents every now and then like fruits baskets or inviting her over for dinner. Her aloof personality doesn't bother him.
★ Chiyo Matsuoka ([personal profile] admiringly): Fellow art club member! He's sometimes assigned to nab a random model with her, so they search the school for one. Fun times.
★ Akira Kurusu ([personal profile] maskreant): That one model for art club. He got dragged in (thanks Akira) and was a model for a day, but he and Daisuke ended up swapping schoolbags on the way home. Daisuke had to take care of a cat that day... Akira's an upperclassman that he saw occasionally, congratulated him when he graduated, etc.
★ Kotone Sonozaki ([personal profile] penalizing): A classmate that he hunts jobs with. They try out all sorts and some end with hilarious results.
★ Kashuu Kiyomitsu ([personal profile] sharplydressed): Met him while jogging in the mornings. Sometimes puts on clothes he makes if he asks to. He's also hears all sorts of advice and stories from him.
★ Tatsuma Hiyuu ([personal profile] strawberrypunch): Makoto's friend that Daisuke met through association. Art has brought them together with friendly bonds and Daisuke also gets along with his grandparents.
★ Keito Hasumi ([personal profile] lecturehall) & Koutarou Takao ([personal profile] wordcarvings): These two are people he looks up to with how much they succeeded with art. He met Keito through an art forum with offline meetings and met Koutarou by walking into his atelier one day out of piqued interest.
★ Mabel ([personal profile] meowbel): Fellow art club member.
★ Mafuyu Kurosaki ([personal profile] buncho): Met her during one of his jogging sessions in the mornings and occasionally sees her in school too.

AU PERSONALITY:
• Even though Daisuke is older than his canon counterpart, not much has changed. He's still a pretty average guy that's good at being nice. However, there are some things that are slightly different.
• Since the whole point of moving out was to build on his independence, Daisuke developed a sense of responsibility. He tries to manage his own things, clean the living space more often, takes care of Makoto when he's dying from finals, attempts to earn his keep by working part time jobs every now and then, and buying groceries. Honestly, one of the challenges he had to overcome was differentiating the quality of the groceries that he could buy at their cheapest. That and cooking when his apartment stinks like paint all day every day.
• He takes the initiative a lot more, such as going ahead and researching/looking for jobs on his own. He also has to deal with Makoto's stubbornness in not wanting to rest with his own stubbornness, so he finds ways to get him to sleep. Sometimes he's successful, sometimes he isn't. It's an ongoing thing.
• Daisuke no longer has to keep secrets from the person he loves, much less keeping a secret about him basically being a criminal, so he's a lot less jittery about the mere mention of said crimes. He isn't held down much by guilt either.
• He's a lot less prone to getting crushes, because he's been so busy with his life happenings. It's not impossible and he does get embarrassed when stopping to think about it, but it's not the first thing that comes up in his mind. He's slightly more level-headed because of this.
